Freon® (the trade name for the coolant R-12) was used in automotive air conditioning systems for decades before it was discovered that this gas damaged the protective ozone layer above the earth. Its use in automotive refrigeration was discontinued and an EPA-rated coolant called R-134a is now used instead.
